Famed creator Yayoi Kusama has died. She held her paintbrushes until right before she died. She experienced hallucinations as a young child. Kusama turned those childhood hallucinations into famous art. Polka dots served as her primary theme. They were featured in her many paintings and sculptures.

Kusama received the Praemium Imperiale award for her achievements in art. Her work gained global fame. One creation, the Red Pumpkin artwork, grew into an icon of Naoshima island. She kept working until her death. She made art rooted in her early childhood experiences and her signature polka dots.
